The Newspaper Guy
There's this guy who sells newspapers (Frankfurter Rundschau) in the city. The first time my sister and I saw him, we were curious about him. He was dressed well and he looked pretty decent. He looked a lot like he belonged inside an office rather than outside, trying to sell newspapers. The guy was obviously German and his English was pretty good, too. He was very friendly and even showed us how we can get discounts with the magazine coupons.
With the current job situation in Germany (not to mention the number of companies getting rid of people who are a few years shy of retiring), I am not surprised if he did work at an office before.
That day, we ended up buying a newspaper and a magazine (Frankfurt Geht Aus) which we didn't really need.
Whenever my sister and I found ourselves in the shopping area, we always checked if he was there. The last time, I was kinda relieved that he was not at his usual place. I thought that maybe he finally found a better paying job.
But a couple of weeks ago, I saw him again while my husband and I were on our way home. He was selling newspapers on the street, near the traffic light. And this time, his eyes looked so sad and defeated.
I do not really know his real story nonetheless, I felt really bad for him. I hate seeing people whose luck seem to have run out.
If only a genie could grant me a wish, I'd ask for those who want, seek and need a job never to be jobless again. Unfortunately, the genie is busy with Alladin over at Disney.
